Chris Kilvington died suddenly in 1999 during the week before he was due to join the teaching staff at Dillington Guitar Summer School in Somerset, UK. To perpetuate and honour the memory of this teacher, player, composer and writer, respected and loved widely throughout the world of classical guitar, this competition is sponsored and hosted by the Dillington Guitar Summer School.
Chris was a supremely practical lover of music. His work was founded on the strong principles of making the music come across, communicate, and have something immediate to say. In his work as Reviews Editor for Classical Guitar magazine, Chris was always clear and straightforward in his views, and fair in his way of expressing them.
One of the areas Chris worked in was that of the amateur guitar orchestra, both at home in Cambridge and in summer schools in many places. This competition is to stimulate and reward the composition of original works suitable for rehearsal and performance by large groups of guitarists of mixed standard, of the kind with whom Chris worked, and for whom he often composed. A short-list of three entries will be rehearsed at Dillington Summer School, the pieces judged both on musical merit, interest and originality, and on their suitability for this kind of performance situation. The winner will receive a cash prize of £100 and the publication of the entry by Corda Music.
